B1Tenses

What is it

The present perfect and past simple are two verb tenses that help us describe when actions happen.

  • The present perfect is formed with has/have + past participle, and it shows actions that started in the past and continue up to the present.
  • The past simple is formed with the past form of the verb, and it shows completed actions in the past.

When to use it

  • We use the present perfect to describe actions that started in the past and continue up to the present.
  • We use the past simple to describe completed actions in the past.
  • We use the present perfect to describe situations that have a result in the present.
  • We use the past simple to describe situations that happened at a specific time in the past.

Examples

  • I have studied English for five years.
  • She ate breakfast at 7am.
  • They have lived in Paris since 2010.
  • We went to the store yesterday.
  • He has been working on the project for three months.
  • They attended the meeting last week.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: I go to the store yesterday. Correct: I went to the store yesterday.
  • Wrong: She has eat breakfast at 7am. Correct: She ate breakfast at 7am.
  • Wrong: They have live in Paris since 2010. Correct: They have lived in Paris since 2010.

Tip

A helpful trick to remember the difference is to think about whether the action is still happening or has finished. If it's still happening, use the present perfect. If it's finished, use the past simple.
