Rule
The article is a small word that helps us talk about nouns, which are people, places, or things. It tells us if we're talking about a specific thing or just any thing.
- a is used for any one thing, like a book
- an is used before words that start with a vowel sound, like an apple
- the is used for a specific thing, like the book on the table
- No article is used for general statements or plural nouns, like dogs are animals
Usage
- We use a / an when we're talking about any one thing, not a specific one.
- We use the when the listener knows which thing we're talking about.
- We use no article for general statements or when we're talking about things in a general way.
Examples
- I'm reading a book about history.
- She ate an apple for lunch.
- Can you pass the salt please?
- Dogs are popular pets.
- I'm going to the store down the street.
- The sun rises in the east.
Common Mistakes
- Wrong: I'm reading the book about history. Correct: I'm reading a book about history.
- Wrong: She ate an sandwich. Correct: She ate a sandwich.
- Wrong: The dogs are animals. Correct: Dogs are animals.
Exceptions
- Some countries and cities don't use the, like Paris.
Tip
Think of a / an as 'one of many', the as 'the one we both know', and no article as 'general or plural'.
