Use the System Requirement Test to check your browser, screen, speakers and microphone before a speaking test or mock test.
Speaking and listening practice need working audio and a microphone. Checking your device first stops a technical problem from spoiling a mock test.
Run the System Requirement Test
- Open Tools → System Check from the side menu, or go to practet.com/tools/system-check.
- The page checks your browser, your screen size and your microphone.
- Allow microphone access when the browser asks.
- Follow the on-screen steps to speak and play your recording back.
What you need
- Browser: the latest Google Chrome (recommended), Microsoft Edge or Safari.
- Microphone: a headset microphone gives the clearest recordings. Built-in laptop mics work, but they pick up more room noise.
- Speakers or headphones: headphones are strongly recommended, because the real exams use them.
- Internet: a stable connection. Speaking answers are uploaded as you go, and a dropped connection can cut an answer short.
- Screen: a laptop or desktop is best for full mock tests. Phones and tablets are fine for single questions.
Checks built into the tests
You'll also see quick checks inside the tests:
- IELTS Speaking: a Quick Mic Check where you read one sentence before the test starts.
- PTE mock test: a Headphone Check and Microphone Check at the start.
- Interview Preparation: a Device & Connection Check for your camera, microphone and connection.
If any check fails, see My microphone isn't working in Troubleshooting.
