IELTS Writing practice (Task 1 and Task 2)
Practise single Task 1 or Task 2 questions, or a full 60-minute Writing mock test, and get an AI band score in about a minute.
Open Writing from the side menu (web) or Home (app).
Task 1 and Task 2 practice
- Task 1 (Academic): describe a chart, graph, table, map or process in at least 150 words.
- Task 1 (General Training): write a letter of at least 150 words.
- Task 2 (both): write an essay of at least 250 words giving and supporting an opinion or discussing views.
- Choose Task 1 or Task 2 and pick a question from the list.
- Click Practice.
- Write your answer in the box (Start your essay from here...). The word count updates as you type and shows whether you've reached the minimum.
- Click Submit and confirm Ready to submit? You can't edit an answer after submitting.
Writing mock test
Both tasks in 60 minutes, as on test day. Switch between Part 1 and Part 2 with the tabs or Previous / Next question, then submit once for both. If one part is empty, you'll see Write your Part 1 answer first (or Part 2), because both parts are needed.
Time plan: about 20 minutes for Task 1 and 40 minutes for Task 2. Task 2 counts for twice as much.
Getting your score
Your answer is analysed right away. The report usually appears within a minute. Turn on notifications (Wait for results?) and we'll tell you when it's ready so you can leave the page.
See Understanding your IELTS Writing report.
Community scores
Under each question you can see scores other students got on it. Compare your band once yours is ready.
Tips
- Plan for 3–5 minutes before writing: your position (Task 2) or the main trends (Task 1).
- Use four paragraphs for Task 2: introduction, two body paragraphs, conclusion.
- Short answers lose marks. Under 150 / 250 words limits your Task Achievement / Task Response band.
