How IELTS Scoring Works

Understand the calculation behind your IELTS band score

IELTS Scoring Process
1

Individual Section Scores

Each of the four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is scored on a scale of 0-9 in half-band increments.

2

Average Calculation

The four section scores are added together and divided by 4 to get the average score.

3

Rounding Rules

The average is rounded to the nearest half band. If the average ends in .25, it rounds up to the next half band.

Example Calculation

Listening: 7.0, Reading: 6.5, Writing: 6.0, Speaking: 7.5

Average: (7.0 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 7.5) ÷ 4 = 6.75

Overall Band Score: 7.0
