OET Results and Scoring

How your Occupational English Test result is calculated and reported.

How OET is scored

Each of the four sub-tests is scored separately from 0 to 500 and given a grade from A to E. There is no combined overall score - regulators and institutions look at the grade for each individual skill. Listening and Reading are marked objectively; Writing and Speaking are each marked by trained assessors against published criteria, with samples double-marked for consistency.

IELTS and CEFR comparisons are approximate and are set by each accepting organisation, not by OET.

What grade do you need?

Most healthcare regulators - for example the NMC and GMC in the UK, and AHPRA in Australia - require a minimum of Grade B (350) in each of the four sub-tests. Some allow one C+ alongside three Bs, and some let you combine grades from two sittings taken close together. Always confirm the exact rule with your board.

When you get results

Results are typically available within about 16 business days of the test, and often sooner for the computer-based format. You view them in your OET account, where you can also send verified results directly to the organisations that need them.

How long results are valid

OET results are generally accepted for two years from the test date, though the final rule is set by the organisation you are applying to.
