About the IELTS General Training Test & Syllabus
IELTS General Training measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. The tasks and texts reflect both workplace and social situations. It is often a requirement for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK, and for secondary education or training programs. The IELTS syllabus for General Training shares its Listening and Speaking sections with IELTS Academic.
How it differs from IELTS Academic
The Listening and Speaking sections are exactly the same as the IELTS Academic test. However, the Reading and Writing sections differ.
In the Reading section, you will encounter extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks, and guidelines. These are materials you would encounter on a daily basis in an English-speaking environment.
In the Writing section, Task 1 requires you to write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or personal) responding to a given situation. Task 2 is an essay, similar to the Academic test, but the topics are generally of more personal or general interest.
